M.R. McCaulley applied for a charter to start a Legion Post in Lake City in June of 1919. On June 27th a meeting was held to elect the officers in Post 31 and they were M.R. McCaulley, Dr. M.J. McVay, Warren Townsend, Don Herrick, David Titus and Clarence Zane. Only 30 other posts in the United States started before us.
With 121 members The Legion has been involved in Community Service since its inception. At the start there were Baseball Leagues for kids, Golf tournaments for the members, and many other fundraisers. Now we also have Breakfasts and the ever-popular Feather Party (Bingo) at Thanksgiving.
Our Fundraisers help to send 2-3 Juniors to Boys State, to help at Christmas time for the needy and to supply uniforms for our Funeral Squad at military funerals. Our Post, along with the VFW Post, put on the Memorial Day Service at the cemetery along with putting 500 small flags on all Veterans graves and flying 362 larger flags in the Avenue of Flags. The cemetery is something to see on Memorial Day with the flags and flowers. There is a fly over by the Iowa National Guard. The Veterans are proud, as they should be!
